Biography
Kim Seung-Hwan was born in South Korea in 1962. He graduated and specialized in sculpture at the National University of Seoul. In 1990 he made his first solo exhibition in the Korean capital. Later he moved to Pietrasanta, in the province of Lucca, a city famous for having welcomed illustrious artists since the time of Michelangelo, to perfect his technique. While working at the SEM studio, he attended the Carrara Academy. He has numerous solo exhibitions to his credit and participates by invitation in international exhibitions of sculpture, obtaining the first awards: First Prize in Fanano (1991), Special Prize in Apricena (1991), Second Prize in the competition (1992). In 1991 he participated in the collective exhibition “30 years of SEM”, which included works by some of the protagonists of contemporary art such as Dalì, Cesar, Botero, Consagra. Since 1994 he has received many awards, such as the Critics’ Prize at the Milan Art Fair, the Carrara International Grand Prix in Italy and the Second Prize at the Cesare Frigerio Competition in France. In the same year he prepares, by invitation, several personal exhibitions in various Italian cities: at the Civic Museums of Monza, Padua, Bologna, Florence, Piacenza, Mantua, Pietrasanta. Later he returned to Korea to follow a project on the theme “Searching for Eternity”. In 2005 he was awarded the authoritative Korean prize for sculpture Kim Jon Yung. From the beginning of his activity until today, he has 34 personal exhibitions, over 340 group exhibitions in South Korea, Italy, China, Australia, Denmark. Some of his works are exhibited at the Museum of the Sketch of Pietrasanta, in Aswan in Egypt, in Perth, Bondi in Australia, Aarhus in Denmark and in various Italian and South Korean cities. Since 2004 he has taught Fine Arts at the Catholic University of Incheon, in South Korea.
